Wedgwood wireless projectors
Wireless technology enables images from a computer to be transmitted to the projector without a wire between the two. Hence the use of a VGA cable to connect the computer to the projector is no longer required. If you have ever made a presentation to an audience using a projector, you may understand how nerve wracking it can be to hook the projector to a laptop to suddenly find that the round data cable you have doesn’t fit into the square data port, or that the cable isn’t long enough. Typically, the longest a VGA cable can be run without loss of signal is 10 metres. With wireless technology you have the freedom to place your projector up to 60 metres away (depending on the manufacturer) from your notebook without any connecting wires. There are two types of wireless connection; Bluetooth and WiFi. The latter is superior as it has a greater bandwidth and also enables the transmission of information over greater distances. WiFi can transmit up to ten times faster than Bluetooth and up to 6 times further than Bluetooth. The majority of laptops sold in the UK can be wireless enabled. In order to use a WiFi wireless projector, which is the most common type, you will need to install a wireless network card in either the desktop and notebook computer you are sending information from. A few projectors come with a wireless PCMCIA card to fit into the side of a notebook computer, but most require you to purchase network cards separately if you do not have one. These can be purchased from most local computer shops, Dixon’s and PC World in the UK. Wireless projectors were designed with sales reps and other mobile presenters/trainers in mind. It is quicker and more professional to set up a wireless projector with a notebook computer and desktop screen than a wired one. You will still need to plug the projector into a power socket, so always take a retractable 10m extension lead with you when making presentations. You will not look prepared and professional if you have to ask a potential client to find an extension cable so that you can try to sell him something. A notebook computer can be run on the battery and a desktop screen can be unfolded in seconds, The great advantage in installing a wireless projector in a training or conference room is that you do not need to worry about cabling. Traditionally you would need to connect a 10 metre VGA cable between the projector and the computers being used, perhaps hiding the wires in trunking, which looks messy. This makes ceiling mounting projectors cheaper and easier. You could ask a local electrician to install a projector ceiling mount kit on your ceiling and wire up a power point for the projector (which can be hidden in suspended ceilings). Then they would mount the projector in the ceiling kit and use the wireless technology to connect to the computer in the room. You may still need to wire up a video cable to video devices such as VCR’s and DVD players. However, you can now install TV tuner cards in PC’s that allow you to display TV, etc through a PC whose images can be sent wirelessly to the projector. Most new computers have DVD drive which an play films. Copyright (c) Wedgwood AV Ltd 2004-2005
